More from the Washington Woods

I’m not certain of the identity of the plant in the foreground… but it certainly is lovely! If you have any suggestions, do let us know. Despite its appearance in this image, it is not a rhododendron. Those leaves are soft, not waxy and rigid. (Some suggestions include cascara, but the jury’s still out on that one.)

  1. HI! It's Indian Plum. Cascara has smaller oval leaves with parallel veins(like a feather) rather than veiny.

  2. PS, the big tree looks like a Big Leaf Maple, and the small fern under its crotch is Licorice Fern(sorry, that sounds funny...), and below that is Sword Fern.

  3. Wyldthang, thanks for stopping by! Indian Plum was my other guess, so I appreciate the confirmation! And I do love those ferns. You're also right about the Big Leafs - they're all over that part of the woods!

dodonflores, thank you! Come back any time. :)
